When he was a kid he made up languages as a hobby. Later he studied philology and became an English teacher in the University of Leeds.
During WWI he fell ill with the trench fever, that’s when he started writing about the Middle Earth, as a way to honour his friends who died in the war.
He spent many years writing about Middle Earth, creating complete languages and mythologies. He is now considered one of the creators of the literary genre of fantasy.
